That’s Our Podium, That’s Our Decision: Chaos, Claps & Fines at the World Cup Opener

PC: Ross Bell
What do you get when you mix two mountain bike legends, a decades-old tradition, and a rule change that no one asked for?
A good ol’ fashioned podium protest - plus a fine spicy enough to make your wallet sweat.
Nino Schurter and Lars Forster aren’t just riding legends.
They’re now podium pirates.
After finishing fourth and fifth in the XCO opener in Araxá, Brazil, the two ignored the new UCI rule slashing the World Cup podium from five riders to three and straight-up stormed the stage.
The three podium finishers were already done posing, medals in hand, when Schurter and Forster rolled up and claimed their slice of tradition.
The crowd? Absolutely lost it.
Huge roars, big cheers, and one collective middle finger to a regulation no one outside a corporate boardroom seems to support.
Their message was clear: “That’s our podium. That’s our decision.”

Of course, the UCI wasn’t about to let them roll off into the sunset.
Both riders were slapped with an 800 CHF (~$944 USD) fine for their unsanctioned podium moment.
Apparently, standing in the wrong place on a stage now costs more than a Fox 36 service.
"This action was planned in advance. All the riders were behind it, and we didn’t harm anyone," Forster told Pinkbike, adding that the fines would be split among the athletes and won’t stop the fight.
"Such a fine won’t stop us from continuing to fight for our interests."
The protest follows a signed statement to Warner Bros.

The UCI and WBD later issued a statement claiming podiums of three align with other formats like the Olympics and World Champs.
Riders say: cool story, but you still ignored us.
Rebecca Henderson, UCI rider rep, backed Forster and Schurter’s protest despite the inevitable fine. "It is truly a shame that it has come to this. This is not working together. We are being overpowered and there is still no logical reason why."

This isn’t the first time riders have clashed with WBD since their takeover, but it's clearly the most united the XC and DH worlds have been.
And honestly, when the fourth and fifth-place prize money can’t even cover the fines (thanks to Brazilian taxes), it’s less about the glory and more about the principle.
The UCI doled out 30 fines total during the opener - 24 of them for riders tossing bottles or gel wrappers outside of designated zones.
So if you’re keeping score: stage-crashing = nearly $1K fine.
Littering? A light slap on the wrist.
While WBD declined to comment, claiming it’s a UCI matter, Henderson isn’t letting go.
"To push us so far that we have to take such an action - does this not send a great message of how significant this is?"
Podiums might’ve shrunk, but the rider resistance? It's never been bigger.

Trail of the Day
LPS - Moab, Utah

LPS is the spicy sequel to the Whole Enchilada, linking up with Porcupine Rim and serving a full platter of slickrock, ledges, flow hits, and techy drops.
Choose between the Notch (for full-send psychos) or the Snotch (still spicy, just slightly less terrifying), then hold on as the trail dances along sandstone ledges before dropping you at the Porcupine Rim overlook.
Post-burrito time never looked this good.
