Public Lands for Sale? Why 3.3 Million Acres Are Suddenly at Risk And What You Can Do About It

Normally we are all about the good vibes but this seemed important 👇

Something big is brewing in the U.S. Senate.

Buried in the latest tax and spending bill is a quiet mandate with massive consequences: the sale of up to 3.3 million acres of public land.

That’s right.

Millions of acres of BLM and Forest Service managed land, potentially stripped from public access and sold off.

It’s not like The Send It Daily to dive into politics, but when good single track comes under threat, we start to pay attention!

Our reaction when we heard the news.

What’s in the Bill?

It’s called the “One Big, Beautiful Bill Act”, and while the title sounds like something from a tourism brochure, the content around public lands is a bit worrisome.

Tacked into this sprawling piece of legislation is a budget directive requiring the sale of up to 3.3 million acres of public land.

That includes 2 million acres that must be sold off in just five years.

There’s no specificity and no clear logic behind which lands will be sold.

That means everything, from iconic desert mesas to beloved singletrack zones to quiet forested backcountry, would be up for grabs.

Where Is This Happening?

If you love to recreate anywhere in the West (Colorado, Utah, Montana, Arizona, Idaho, Nevada, Wyoming, and more) you should be aware.

Maps released by The Wilderness Society show 11 western states are in the crosshairs of potentially losing access to single track.

The parcels are vast and varied, but what they all have in common is this: they currently belong to all of us.

If this bill passes with the land sale provision intact, that could end.

We’re not just talking about hypothetical places here, we’re talking about your go-to trail network, your family’s annual camping spot, your favorite remote ridgeline or desert gravel loop.

The moment this land is sold, it stops being ours.

What Does This Mean for Mountain Biking and Outdoor Recreation?

Land managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the U.S. Forest Service is a HUGE part of American mountain biking.

It’s where trail builders dream, where events happen, where we ride all summer long.

But when land is sold, public access becomes restricted, expensive, or impossible.

Goodbye open trails. Hello locked gates and private development.

Who’s Behind It?

If the budget is passed by the July 4 deadline, an estimated 16 million acres in California are at risk of being sold over the next five years. According to The New York Times and Outside Magazine, the push for this land selloff comes largely from Senators Mike Lee (R-UT) and Steve Daines (R-MT).

They worked behind the scenes to get this proposal embedded in the Senate draft, despite knowing full well the outrage it sparked in the House.

Even Ryan Zinke, Montana Republican and former Interior Secretary, called the idea “folly.” As he told Outside:

“The idea that you’re going to sell public land to get out of debt is folly.”

What You Can Do (Right Now)

You don’t need to write a manifesto. You don’t need to become an expert in land policy. You just need to raise your voice.

Outdoor Alliance has put together an action center where you can send a message directly to your senators in under 60 seconds.

👉 Click here to make your voice heard.

Do it today. Forward it to your crew. Post it in your ride group. Talk about it at the trailhead. This matters.

We fight for trails, for access, and for the next generation of riders who deserve to know what freedom in the outdoors really feels like.

Let’s not lose that now.

For the love of single track!
