How I Built This: Focus Bikes – From Cyclocross Champ to German Bike Royalty
If you've ever found yourself bombing down a trail and thinking, “Wow, this thing rides like a dream tuned by a mad genius,” there’s a good chance you were on a Focus.
But let’s rewind.
Before e-MTBs had acronyms and before gravel became a personality trait, Focus Bikes was just an idea in the brain of three-time cyclocross World Champion Mike Kluge.
Founded in 1991 and officially rolling out production in 1993, Kluge didn’t just want to slap his name on some downtubes, he wanted to build something better.
Something German.
Something with grit, precision, and the kind of control that makes your knees weak (in a good way).
By 1994, Focus launched its first six mountain bikes and quickly proved they weren’t playing around.
A year later, they expanded into trekking bikes, because why should mountain bikers have all the fun?

By 2003, Focus was making road bikes, and by 2006, they were deep in carbon fiber wizardry.
Then came the e-bikes, the racing pedigree, and that one time in 2005 when Hanka Kupfernagel won a world championship on a Focus Mares Team bike like it was NBD.
Fast forward to now, and Focus is owned by the German cycling giant Derby Cycle, itself a part of Pon Holdings, a Dutch conglomerate that also owns Cervélo and Gazelle.
But make no mistake: Focus still does things the Focus way.
They develop all bikes in Stuttgart and assemble them in Emstek, Germany, which is corporate speak for “we prototype it, beat the hell out of it, and then build it for you.”
From Backyard Tinkering to Patented Brilliance
Focus didn’t stop at frame shapes and decals.
They also invented F.O.L.D. (Focus Optimized Linkage Design), a two-phase rear suspension system that eats square-edge hits for breakfast and still has room for finesse on the side.
It’s the kind of tech you brag about mid-ride when your friends are wondering why your rear end isn’t screaming.
Then there’s C.I.S. (Cockpit Integration Solutions), their answer to the “rats nest of cables” problem.
Neatly tucked, fully functional, and aerodynamic enough to make a roadie blush, because beauty is in the bar tape, people.
Meet the Dream Team (of Bikes)
Here’s what Focus is shipping now, and spoiler: every single one slaps.
Every ride style. Every watt budget.
Focus has a rig with your name on it, maybe even your blood type.
Thron²: For the “I want one bike that can do everything” crowd.

The THRON² 6.8 upgrades the entry-level 6.7 with a 1x12 Shimano SLX drivetrain, dropper post, and a massive 625Wh battery - all for an extra grand.
It keeps the same chassis and Bosch motor, adds air suspension with a RockShox Recon RL fork, and packs quad-piston brakes plus grippy Schwalbe tires for full-send confidence.
Basically, it's like giving your trail legs a double shot of espresso and telling them to behave.
Sam²: Downhill bruiser with an uphill motor assist.

For proper enduro bashing, you’ll be wanting to check out this bike – the Focus SAM.
Utilising the same compact F.O.L.D suspension platform as the JAM, the SAM bumps up the travel to a monstrous 170mm front and rear.
You’re getting aggro 27.5in Maxxis tyres, a piggyback Fox Float DPX2 shock, and the venerable Fox 36 fork up front.
This particular model – the SAM 8.9 – gets a hybrid frame setup with a carbon front end and an alloy swingarm.
Upping the value stakes is a combo SRAM 1×12 drivetrain that utilises GX and NX components, while Guide R brakes clamp down on huge 200mm diameter rotors.
More Than a Brand. A Vibe.
What sets Focus apart isn’t just German engineering or Kluge’s legacy, it’s that weird, glorious hybrid of performance and play.
Their mission? “Inspire all people to ride together.”
Their vision? “Make all people feel the happiness of a great ride.”
Their approach? Ride it, break it, fix it, and then ride it harder.
From cyclocross championships to Black Forest singletrack to city streets, Focus Bikes is proof that when passion leads, precision follows.

Trail of the Day
Banana Peel Mountain Biking Trail - Winter Park, Colorado
They call it a trail, but it’s really a rite of passage.
From the 25’ step-up to the Banana Hammock Fruit Bowl (yep, it’s as wild as it sounds), this is where bravery meets madness.
Mandatory airs, log drops, and gaps so big they’d make your bike blush, this isn’t a casual ride.
Near the bottom of the mountain and off the Boulevard, it waits to separate the senders from the pretenders.
Special pass required, because this one doesn’t play nice.
That’s all for today folks. We hope everyone gets some saddle time out there. See you all tomorrow! 🤙
For the ❤️ of two wheels.
