It was a treat coming across this 2015 gem of the legend Stevie Smith.
When the trail is literally molten rock, only the Chainsaw would say, "Hold my beer."

What’s better than riding A-Line?
Watching an FPV drone shred it so close you can hear the tires bite the dirt.

Volcanic Loam & Hawaiian Dreams: The Lost MTB Chapter of the '90s

In the early ‘90s, while the rest of the mountain bike world was still figuring out how to spell “suspension,” Hawaii was quietly playing host to one of the most unhinged and gloriously untamed riding scenes on the planet.
June 1993’s issue of Mountain Bike Action didn’t just flirt with the story. They went full honeymoon, dropping ten pages of pure island magic.
Forget luaus and leis, this was sweat-soaked jungle climbs, lava rock carnage, and descents so sketchy you’d swear the trees were betting against you.
Hawaii was a tropical dream on two wheels.
Ker & McCoy: The Two-Wheeled Pirates of the Pacific

At the helm of this madness?
Photographer John Ker and longboard-pro-turned-MTB-test-dude Sean McCoy, two absolute units of adventure who decided surfing wasn’t spicy enough.
Ker had been pointing cameras at North Shore surf carnage since the '70s and knew exactly how to capture the chaos.
McCoy, meanwhile, looked at roots and cliffs like they owed him money and charged accordingly.
Together they bushwhacked, sweated, and slid through Hawaii’s raw terrain like it was their backyard.
There’s that one photo, McCoy near a waterfall, adjusting his helmet like he’s about to drop into Mordor, that still smells like chain lube and wet ferns.
Trails So Wild They Probably Had a Pulse

These weren’t groomed bike park flow trails with color-coded signs and souvenir shops.
No sir.

These were trails forged by pigs, rain, and geological trauma.
Slippery jungle climbs, descents where your brakes begged for mercy, and volcanic scree fields that turned derailleur hangers into collector’s items.

Every turn was blind, every drop was a gamble, and yet every ride felt like you were the first person to ever lay rubber down on that dirt.
The Scene That Ghosted Us All

And yet… poof.
The Hawaiian MTB scene never went full send.
There’s no pilgrimage to Hawaii on every rider’s bucket list.
No iconic trail names whispered over campfires.
Why? Maybe because surfing is religion there, and mountain biking was always the weird little cousin.
Maybe it’s logistics: remote location, high maintenance, and not enough hype.
Whatever the reason, Hawaii’s MTB potential has stayed mostly dormant, like a volcano just waiting for the right rider to poke it with a dropper post.
Reignite the Stoke: Hawaii Deserves a Comeback
Hawaii still slaps.
The trails are still out there: dense, dangerous, and disgustingly beautiful.
Local shops still exist, full of stories, stoke, and the occasional hidden route if you ask nicely.
Riders are just waiting to rediscover what Ker and McCoy already knew: this place rips.
It might be time to trade Whistler for waterfalls and Moab for magma rock.
Take your bike to the islands, and bring extra brake pads and a sense of humor.
Because this isn’t just a forgotten chapter of MTB history, it’s a love letter written in mud, moss, and mosquito bites.
And it's begging for a comeback.
