Throwback Tuesday? Now a thing.

In 2018, Brandon Semenuk peaced out from competitions. (Not to retire. Not to "find himself." Definitely not to take up pickleball.)

Instead, he went full beast mode and pushed the sport to places the rest of us can’t even imagine without tearing an ACL.

The result? AIM.

A film that's basically the Holy Grail for mountain bike nerds.

If you haven’t seen it yet, congrats. You just found internet gold. 🏆

Bonus: Ever wondered what happens when you take downhill racing to the wind tunnel?

This video’s a deep dive into the high-tech world of speed testing.

Asa and crew are putting the science to the test, and the results are more than just wind in their faces - it's precision and milliseconds at stake.

Atlethe Profile - Tyler McCaul: Freeride Legend, Triple Tailwhip Pioneer, and the King of Off-The-Bike Shenanigans

If you’ve ever found yourself at a mountain bike comp or perched at the top of a gnarly freeride line in the Utah desert, there's a good chance you’ve seen the name Tyler McCaul, or, as his friends like to call him, “T-Mac.”

Born and raised in the mountain biking mecca of Santa Cruz, California, Tyler’s journey to becoming a freeride legend wasn’t exactly a straightforward one.

Nope, this wasn’t just some kid who was born with a helmet on and a bike in his hand.

His roots are steeped in a blend of good ol' American backyard shenanigans, dirt jump sessions at the legendary Post Office in Aptos, and an undeniable passion for going fast - real fast.

The T-Mac legacy kicked off when Tyler was just 13 years old.

At that tender age, he inked his first deal with Fox Racing while racing juniors.

But like many pro athletes, Tyler quickly learned that reaching the elite level in downhill racing wasn’t all just sprinting down hills and landing a perfect run.

It takes years of blood, sweat, and a seriously obnoxious amount of time on the bike to even come close to competing with the big dogs.

While he had the racing chops to make it big in downhill, Tyler quickly realized that to compete at that elite level, he’d have to spend way more time on his DH bike than he was able to.

So, at 19, he made a shift that changed the trajectory of his career: He traded his downhill racing career for freeride.

Freeride or Bust

As it turns out, the switch wasn’t that difficult.

With a growing obsession for dirt jumps, backyard pump tracks, and a community of local riders in Aptos who were constantly pushing the boundaries of what could be done on a bike, Tyler realized that freestyle was where he belonged.

And really, could you blame him?

Freeride was the ultimate playground - where big blind drops and insane jumps were all part of the fun.

With his brother Cam leading the charge, Tyler quickly found his rhythm.

Tyler’s entry into the world of pro biking wasn't as glamorous as some would think.

At 18, he signed his first paid contract, worth a whopping $8,000 for the year.

The money was enough to cover travel expenses - just barely.

Think sleeping on floors and eating fast food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

But hey, it was all part of the journey, right? As Tyler would later joke, “Luckily, it just snowballed from there.”

While we all know that snowballs don’t roll downhill unless they’ve got a ton of grit and dedication behind them, Tyler’s humble beginnings proved to be the foundation of an epic career.

The Big Red Bull Rampage Moment

Tyler McCaul’s participated in 10 Red Bull Rampages - yeah, you read that right - 10.

He’s in rarefied air, joining only a handful of legends like Kyle Strait, Darren Berrecloth, and Cam Zink. We’re talking about serious company here.

Tyler’s been hucking himself off cliffs and catching massive airtime for over a decade, and while Rampage is about sending it hard, his biggest challenge: injuries.

When you’re getting smashed into the dirt at 50 mph, it’s not just the physical pain that gets you; it’s the mental toll.

“Sometimes the mental side of injuries is worse than the physical”

But instead of letting the injuries beat him down, he comes back stronger every time.

That’s exactly why he’s still out there, sending it at Rampage when many other riders would’ve called it quits years ago.

A Gap for the Books

Last year at Rampage, Tyler McCaul cemented himself on the podium with one of the biggest hucks we’ve ever seen.

On a course that looked like a bad fever dream of cliffs and craters, T-Mac dropped into his line with full commitment.

And then came the moment: The canyon gap.

A yawning, tire-eating, “hope you paid your life insurance” sized canyon.

Tyler didn’t just clear it. He sent it with the kind of casual steeze that makes you question physics. Perfect form. Full throttle. Zero hesitation.

That jump was a statement. A "this is my house too" moment.

The rest of his run? Flawless. Stylish. Confident. Like he was hosting a private party on the gnarliest terrain in the world.

Result? Third place on the podium.

But for anyone who watched it live... it felt like a win for everyone who loves seeing pure, fearless riding.

What’s Next for T-Mac?

Tyler McCaul is a living legend.

From sending it at Red Bull Rampage to building trails and pushing his limits every single day, he proves that mountain biking is about more than just the ride - it’s about resilience, passion, and never backing down, no matter how many times you get knocked down.

His journey is a testament to the grit required to stay on top in this sport, and with every new challenge, he only gets better.

Tyler’s not done yet, so keep your eyes peeled - because whatever comes next, it’s sure to be epic.
